The authors analyze the content and the meanings of the present stage of social development in its interrelations with education, and also the essence, role and symbols of education in the society of the XXI century. In the article, there is studied the specificity of social development in end of XX - the beginning of XXI centuries, there are shown interrelation and distinctions of various steps of postindustrial society (information society, society of knowledge and innovative society), there is demonstrated the specificity of educational systems at these steps of the social organization. Thus, there is substantiated specific role and content of education for various forms of organization of modern society: knowledge-based and innovative ones.
