Аннотация

The paper describes the meanings conveyed by the so-called non-evidential mood forms and their relation to the evidential and mirative meanings, evidentiality and mirativity being treated as independent semantic categories. The conclusion has been drawn that there are no grounds to treat the forms in question as grammaticalized mood forms. It has been shown that mirative and inferential meanings are marked by a lexical means – by the combination of the particle b’in’/b’en’ and the past or present forms of finite verbs. The particle is a mirativity operator marking the speaker’s epistemic status rather than an evidential one marking the information source though an inferential reading of the statement is possible. The function of the mirativity operator is to mark that the proposition is new knowledge, i.e. it has not been integrated into the speaker’s knowledge yet.
