The journal was founded in January 1980.

The journal “Geography and Natural Resources” publishes information on research results in the field of geographical studies of nature, the economy, and the population. It provides ample coverage of the geographical aspects relating to solving major economic problems, with special emphasis on regional nature management and environmental protection, geographical forecasting, integral regional research developments, a modelling of natural processes, and on the advancement of mapping techniques. The journal publishes contributions on monitoring studies, geographical research abroad, as well as discussions on the theory of science.

Dear Reader,

It is a pleasure to introduce the first issue of the journal "Geography and Natural Resources" as an English translation. The Russian language version has been published since 1980, which to date has 110 issues containing 3000 scientific papers and other contributions. Each issue of the journal contains generous coverage of the latest research methods and the scientific views of leading Russian and foreign experts in geography. It is the only geographical periodical in Eastern Russia that welcomes original reports submitted not only by internationally known experts in the field, but also by young scientists.

The journal focuses on the following outstanding problems in geographical science:
- development of theoretical and methodological ideas.
- implementation of novel research technologies, primarily informational and cartographic techniques.
- sectoral and comprehensive analysis of the territorial organization of Asian Russia.
- territorial and sectoral planning of ecologically oriented land use.
- experimental and procedural fundamentals of paleoreconstructions of natural processes and phenomena.
- landscape-ecological and socio-economic problems as related to the exploration and development of Siberian regions.
- role of Asian Russia in the world economy structure.
- assessment of natural-resource potential of Siberian regions.
- medical-geographical and demographic problems.
- trans-boundary factors of territorial development.

The primary theme of contributions encompasses the territory of Asian Russia. Particular attention is attached to Lake Baikal, which is a World Nature Heritage site. The authors advocate the preservation of natural assets which have an important significance for the international community, and for their judicious exploitation.

Over the course of many years, the reader of the journal was able to obtain information on all problems relating to the development of Siberia: the ecological consequences of the would-be derivation of Siberian rivers to Central Asia, the construction of the Baikal-Amur Main railroad, and of the Kansk-Achinsk fuel and energy complex. In recent years the journal has been keeping up with a major problem, i.e. the construction project of the East Siberia – Pacific oil pipeline and vigorously protested the laying of its route along the shore of Lake Baikal.

It is the strategy of the Editorial Board to adhere to a major geographical focus of the journal as a system of knowledge of territorial organization in the broad sense of this concept. Geographical science must not only obtain a new knowledge, but it should use it in managing the territorial development and maintain a balance of the interests of the society and natural environment.

A few recent issues of the journal largely centered on the jubilee dates: the 50th Anniversary of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the 50th Anniversary of the V.B. Sochava Institute of Geography SB RAS. The Editorial Board includes leading geographers of Russia and other countries. The many years of cooperation with the SB RAS Presidium are the key to its high quality and timely publication.

The principal task of the Editorial Board is to improve its publication through this new dialogue with international readers. We are looking forward to your encouragement and support, and we are looking forward to receiving interesting contributions from you. The journal is open to all those who are interested in the advancement of geographical science, and an enhancement in the exchange of information about novel ideas, methodologies, and state-of-science knowledge of hitherto unexplored territories and retrospective reconstruction of natural processes. Papers submitted by authors from across the globe are particularly welcome. It is an ‘open secret’ that there is some unjustified unawareness of the present status and deficits of geographical research internationally. The journal is interested in reviews on geographical and ecological issues, as well as information on scientific and geographical meetings, significant events, dates, and comments on major scientific publications.

We invite the cooperation of those who are committed to science and who are aware of the difficulty of our existence is primarily due to our poor knowledge of the world surrounding us, and we look forward to sharing their expertise and ideas.
