The elemental composition of drinking water in the northern and central regions of the Russian Federation

Abstract
The macro- and microelement composition of drinking water from the centralised water supply and bottled water consumed by the residents of the Russian North (in the cities of Murmansk, Apatity, and Magadan) and by the residents of Moscow and Ulyanovsk as reference cities was studied. Water from the centralised supply system and bottled water in the northern regions is characterised by decreased concentrations of essential elements Ca, I, Mg (below the established standard for the physiological completeness of drinking water. At the same time, no chemical elements were found in these water samples at concentrations exceeding the maximum allowable concentration (MAC). In comparison with the northern regions, water from the central regions of Russia is reliably richer in B and K (p < 0.001), but the concentrations of these elements also do not exceed MAC. For tap and bottled water samples from Moscow and tap water samples from Ulyanovsk, an exceedance of the MAC was recorded for only one element: P.
